Reflection
Chapter 20 confronts the belief that in order to be accepted, loved, or successful, we must shrink — our dreams, our voices, our personalities, or our ambitions. Many of us have learned, consciously or unconsciously, that being “too much” is a problem.
This chapter reminds us that diminishing ourselves does not create peace; it creates quiet resentment and unrealized potential. When we silence our ideas or soften our goals to make others comfortable, we disconnect from our authentic selves.
The reflection here calls for courage. Standing fully in who we are may feel uncomfortable at first, especially if we are used to minimizing our needs or achievements. But growth requires expansion, not contraction.
At its core, this chapter encourages us to take up the space we were created to occupy. We can be kind without being small, ambitious without being arrogant, and confident without apology. When we stop shrinking, we begin living more honestly and boldly.
Prompt
Where have you been minimizing yourself to fit someone else’s expectations?
What would it look like to show up fully and unapologetically in that space?
